Upgrade to a Blast Furnace (2× speed for ores) or Smoker (2× speed for food) when you can.
Thermal Series machines (Redstone Furnace) are a direct upgrade with speed and augments.
Mekanism's Energized Smelter is the best upgrade — runs on FE and can be speed-boosted.
